Rubbish in, Rubbish Out – Rarely We Fuel the Body Properly –
The human body is an amazing thing which can cope with a spectacularly wide array of foods. It specialises at extracting the required parts of nutrition and excreting the rest.
You have biological priorities for every calorie you eat. You cannot change these. Fuel the brain, then survive. Have sex, look after the kids. Then lay down fat. In that order. Every time.
Our bodies need enough calories to keep our brains and vital organs functioning. We also need to move well enough to survive and reproduce. Any excess energy is laid down efficiently into our fat layers as a store for leaner times.
This amazingly efficient biological organism works for and against us. It works for us so we can put any old rubbish in and will reliably extract the protein, vitamins, minerals, vital fats and essential amino acids needed to function perfectly. It works against us only when we have an excess of energy. And most of us do. On most days.
Eat less and move more and everything will improve.
We are perfectly evolved to thrive in an environment where food is scarce and are not designed to cope with the excess of food that most of us eat today. This works against us because we are so efficient at laying down fat. We lay down the cuddle around our middle to keep us alive in the food scarcity of Winter. We prepare too well, this fat layer shoving us towards an early grave. Our curvy middles lead to joint destruction, make us unhappy and to add insult to injury, we don’t look nearly as sexy as we used to when examining ourselves in front of a mirror. Naked.
Being too heavy affects the blood vessels. Hardening of the arteries contributes to high blood pressure and in turn early death and disability from heart attacks and strokes. Weight related diabetes worsens those along with giving erectile dysfunction, loss of sensation in hands and feet, blindness and chronic severe nerve pains. Weight related arthritis causes long-term pain and disability, sometimes requiring joint replacement surgery. Some people can’t even walk.
We are not designed well to cope with an excess of fat. Our moods suffer, we become depressed, we slow down. We tend to enjoy life less and our sex lives suffer.
Thirty percent of the women in the USA and the UK are currently overweight or obese. They are much less likely to conceive and much more likely to have a miscarriage if they do. They are also at increased risk of heavy unpredictable periods. Being overweight increases the risk of nearly every cancer, including breast and womb cancer. Being overweight increases the risk of severe chest infections and increases the risk of clots in the veins in the leg (deep vein thrombosis – DVT), which can spread to the lungs (pulmonary embolus – PE) and kill you.
Currently a quarter of children in the USA and UK at the age of eleven are overweight or obese. This is a big problem, getting bigger every year. Being overweight kills more people and causes more disability than smoking. The time for action is now!
More on this another day…
