Gastric Band Testimonial from Michelle J
Gastric band surgery 10th March 2014
I have been overweight for most of my adult life, after having three children and giving up work to care for them my weight escalated to 135kg/21 stone. I had tried and failed at weight watchers, slimming world, and any other fad diets I set my heart on that month. It was just after Christmas (January 2014) that I considered weight loss surgery.
I trawled the internet reading the pro’s and con’s of each procedure and reading about patients that had undergone gastric band surgery and all their success stories. I decided that surgery definitely was for me and I wanted the adjustable gastric band.
I knew that because I lived in Wales that the NHS Gastric Band Criteria is not funded freely and I would be sure to have a minimum 3 years wait on the list, so privately really was my only option.
I again went online looking for affordable gastric band surgery cost.
I found that the surgery I wanted would cost around £6000 in this country and I was upset to think that this way out of my league. I eventually stumbled on the French cosmetic surgery website and began reading the testimonials from other patients. The price was attractive and everyone commented on how ‘looked after’ they felt. I initially thought the whole thing was maybe a scam as it seemed to good to be true! I decided I had nothing to lose but to fill in the online inquiry form…. This is where my journey began.
A short while later I received a call from Tullia, she is French but speaks very good English. She asked me some health questions and talked me through the whole procedure and explained that the hotel was included in the price, and that I could take someone with me. I had already set my mind on the operation and at this stage I wasn’t a bit nervous, I was just anxious to get it done and start my new slimmer life.
We talked about some dates and I worked out when was good for me so I could arrange childcare. We set a date for the second week in March. Tullia explained that I would need to do a bank transfer prior to my operation, I was a little nervous about paying up front without seeing anyone first, but I sorted it out which was straightforward and I received an email from Tullia to say she had received the fax from my bank confirming payment.
I arrived at the 4* Novotel in Le Havre on Monday 10th March which incidentally is just a ten minute walk from the ferry port. Me and my friend were greeted at reception and given our key card. The hotel was lovely, clean plush and friendly. We relaxed in our room, showered and changed. Our taxi was coming at 2.30 to take us to the hospital so we went down to it.
Bang on time a taxi arrived, he was friendly and drove us to the hospital which was about 15 min away from the hotel. An English song came on the radio and we all started singing! He dropped us off at the entrance and showed us which way to go. We were directed to the consulting rooms.
A nurse showed us in to a room, weighed me and checked my height and asked us to wait a little while for the doctor. There was no long waiting in a crowded waiting room, we were dealt with straight away. Dr B.B entered the room who spoke good English and we talked through my health and previous operations etc. He seemed really nice and straight away I felt reassured that I was in safe hands. I was then taken to have blood tests, again no waiting! Straight in, nurses took my blood and was then seen by the anesthetist. When that was completed, a taxi was called I was told that I had Tuesday off and 6.30am Wednesday a taxi would take me to the hospital.
We spent the free day in Le Havre, we walked around and had lunch at a Turkish restaurant.
The morning of the gastric band operation came, again we went down early for the Taxi and it arrived exactly on time. We went to the ward and the nurses welcomed me to my own private en suite room, straight away they were there filling out my wrist bands and signing consent forms it all became real then. I was told to shower in a brown liquid which I think is procedure there to ensure you are really clean prior to surgery. At 8 am two porters came to collect me, I was taken down to operating theatre and went through another few checks. Dr B was there and patted my shoulder as I went to sleep.
I was in a lot of pain when I came around in recovery but the nurses quickly set up a drip for pain relief. I was taken back to the ward with my friend and nurses came in and out frequently to check on me. I was given more pain relief and I had a glucose drip, I was sleepy but also being very sick. Dr B was called and he prescribed an anti sickness which worked a treat. I felt like I had been punched and kicked in my stomach but overall I felt OK.
On Thursday morning I was taken to radiology to have an x-ray of my gastric band and port, this was needed for my aftercare and fills in the UK which I will need to take with me.
I was discharged from the hospital and a taxi came to take us back to the hotel, I was still sore but Dr B had given me pain killers to ease any discomfort. We had a restful afternoon and my friend went down for Jacuzzi and sauna, I went along but just chilled out in the loungers. At tea time there was a knock on the door, room service! Tullia had ordered and soup and yogurt for me, I was shocked but welcomed this as I hadn’t eaten anything since Tuesday. The soup was delicious, the nicest I have ever tried. I managed 3 spoons until I was full, I couldn’t believe I couldn’t manage anymore!
The Friday was my day of departure, in the morning Dr B came and checked me over to ensure the gastric band was OK, he gave me a box of anti clotting injections which I had to use everyday for 10 days. He showed me how to inject myself and wished me a safe journey home.
So back home now and i’ve had my 11 stitches out, I was mainly on liquid diet but gradually eating a little more soft solids. I’m managing a few spoons of mashed potato or yogurt and drinking plenty of water.
I was weighed 10 days after gastric band surgery and I was shocked to see that I had already lost 1 stone 8lb!
This experience has changed my whole life and I am so thankful to Tullia and Dr B for giving me back my life, everything was taken care of and I didn’t have to worry about a thing. Tullia rang me the weekend after my gastric band surgery and I honestly couldn’t thank her enough.
If anyone has any doubts about gastric band surgery or this company, please don’t. It’s a credible company and I would recommend this company to any of my friends or family.
