Sheila sent in this Gastric Sleeve Testimonial Update in Feb 2016Well it has now been a year since my Gastric Sleeve Surgery and I have to say that my life is so different. Thanks to Laser Clinic looking after me so well during this year, I have now lost a total of 35 kilos (77 lbs or 5 1/2 Stn). Although this may have been slower than most people, I am more than happy with my weight loss. The support they give before, during, and after is exceptional. I have been able to message Tullia anytime and she has always replied quickly, either by message or phone call. I had the opportunity to talk to the BBC in November 2015 to give a testimonial as to why I decided on a gastric sleeve and how I am now. My family encourage the exercise as they are also using the gym, so good move for everyone. I walked to work one morning which is 3.5 miles and hope (once the weather is better) to be walking home from work at least once a week (time allowing). I just wouldn’t have been able to do any of this a year ago.|

The FDA has approved a gastric balloon to treat obesity, adding to a fat-busting device arsenal that includes gastric banding and a vagal nerve stimulator. The ReShape dual balloon system is indicated for obese adults who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40, and at least one other obesity-related comorbidity such as hypertension, high cholesterol, or diabetes. It’s placed into the stomach using an endoscope, and once it’s inflated it is meant to diminish obesity by triggering feelings of fullness, “or by other mechanisms that are not yet understood,” according to the FDA press release. The outpatient procedure takes less than 30 minutes, according to the agency, which noted that the temporary device should be removed 6 months after insertion. In a 326-patient clinical trial, patients on the device lost an average of 14.3 pounds over 6 months, compared with 7.2 pounds for those in the control group. Those on the device managed to keep 10 of those pounds off 6 months after the device was removed. Although some gastric balloon devices are already on the market in Europe and South America, no gastric balloon has ever been approved in the U.S. before. That’s due to disastrous trials from the 1980s of other intragastric balloons that involved serious complications and some deaths. The ReShape device seeks to prevent some of those complications by including two balloons instead of one. The idea is that should one balloon rupture, the other will keep it “afloat” in the stomach so that it doesn’t migrate into the small intestine where it could cause an obstruction or perforation. FDA cautioned that side effects during the placement procedure include headache, muscle pain, and nausea, and in rare cases severe allergic reactions, heart attack, esophageal tear, infection, or breathing difficulties. Side effects once the device is in place could include vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, gastric ulcers, and feelings of indigestion, the agency said. The device is contraindicated in patients who’ve had previous gastrointestinal or bariatric surgery or who have been diagnosed with inflammatory intestinal or bowel disease, large hiatal hernia, symptoms of delayed gastric emptying or an active H. Pylori infection. It’s also not intended for pregnant women or for those who use aspirin daily. There are three other devices approved to treat obesity in the U.S. These include Allergan’s Lap-Band, Ethicon’s adjustable gastric band, and a vagal nerve stimulator. In addition to the vagal nerve stimulator and now the gastric balloon, obesity specialists have had a wide swath of new treatments open to them in the last few years, as the FDA also approved a handful of new obesity drugs, including Contrave, Qsymia, and Belviq. the month of June has had a particularly large number of patients asking specifically about the gastric sleeve gastrectomy procedure. So, as the month comes to a close, Dr. Feiz has selected the question of why this procedure has so quickly grown in popularity as the June ‘Patient Submitted Question of the Month.’ According to Dr. Feiz, there are three reasons in particular that patients have been turning more and more to the sleeve gastrectomy when electing a bariatric surgery. 1. “It’s a Happy Medium” – The reason that the gastric Band became so popular nearly a decade ago, notes Dr. Feiz, is because it was shown to have a lower risk of complications than the “gold standard” gastric bypass procedure. Although the gastric bypass resulted in more rapid weight loss, many opted to go with the band simply due to the decreased risk. Shortly after the sleeve procedure was introduced, however, it was revealed that it can often help patients lose weight quicker than the Lap Band, while having fewer complications than the bypass. Dr. Feiz says that is this combination of benefits that makes it a wise choice for many bariatric patients seeking a middle-ground. 2. “It Has Hormonal Advantages” – In addition to limiting the capacity of the stomach, Dr. Feiz reminds his patients that a sleeve gastrectomy also limits the amount of ghrelin that is released by the stomach. Ghrelin is a hormone released by stomach that tells the brain that it is time to eat. In obese patients, however, it appears to be produced in too much abundance, and production appears to increase as an individual loses weight. When 80 percent of the stomach is removed with a sleeve gastrectomy, many of the hormone emitters that release ghrelin are also removed. The result is a significant reduction in the persistent cravings that can sabotage long-term weight loss. 3. “It Involves No Foreign Objects” – While the gastric Band is relatively safe, many patients still don’t like the idea of a permanent foreign object in their body or the periodic adjustments required with banding. The gastric sleeve gastrectomy, on the other hand, simply creates a stomach that is smaller without putting any permanent fixtures (other than simple stitches) in place. The sleeve gastrectomy also avoids altering the path of digestion, as is the case with the gastric bypass.
