Weight loss supplements are all the rage, they are everywhere and sometimes hard to ignore.

Obesity is a problem that faces 2/3 of the American and UK adult population and 15% of the teenagers. I lecture young adults 17-24 and I have witnessed this increase in obesity over the last 10 years. This problem with weight gain has been growing over the past several decades and is creating medical and emotional problems. As people’s waistlines expand so does the number of weight loss supplements.

Although the way to lose weight is relatively simple, the execution is for many people difficult. Often people will turn to weight loss supplements because changing their eating habits is just so difficult and using supplements and pills can sometimes help reduce that challenge and in theory make losing weight much less painless.

We also want fast progress and instant results. We want fast food, fast Internet, fast service and fast weight loss. We want it all and we want it quickly and painlessly.

So let’s look at weight loss supplements. They fall into two large categories; over the counter and prescription medications. Prescription supplements are only available from your doctor and a pharmacist.

Prescription medications will have undergone severe testing by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The manufacturing of these products will also be regulated.

Over the counter weight loss supplements are not regulated by the FDA and are not classified as drugs. As they are not classified as drugs there will be no regulation on their distribution or on the manufacturing process. Usually there are no stringently performed scientific research studies that evaluate their efficacy and possible side effects of the weight loss supplement.

An example of a weight loss supplement is Ephedra. This supplement has shown a good success rate with weight loss but also has many serious side effects. These side effects include blood pressure problems, cardiac issues and even death. The media eventually got to Ephedra and this made a huge dent in the sales volume of the supplement. This improved the health of those who thought that taking it would be an easy route to lose weight.

Hoodia Gordonii is another supplement that has some medical consequences. There is a credible weight loss in the small studies that have been done but only one type of the Hoodia has the P57 component that is the appetite suppressant. There is some pure Hoodia but there are in fact very few manufacturers that guarantee the authenticity and quality of the product. There have also been some research studies that have indicated significant side effects in the liver.

Many of the over the counter weight loss supplements also use caffeine as their active ingredient. Caffeine dehydrates the body and the client will feels an initial ‘thinness’. This feeling is followed by rebound bloating when the body attempts to retain as much fluid as possible for survival. It’s all part of Homeostasis where the body keeps the fluid balance constant and if too much water is lost it will readjust and retain more.

When you choose a weight loss supplement always look at the ingredients – both the active and inactive ones. Pills often will have inactive ingredients that can affect you adversely, sometimes even as much as the active ingredients. Check with the pharmacist if you are taking any other medications to ensure there are no known drug interactions between the tablets you already take and these over-the-counter ones you are considering.

Just remember this – anything you purchase and put into your body should be treated just like a medication or drug. Just because it has a label calling it a supplement, or all natural or herbal does not mean that it will not have side effects or will not interact with medications you are already taking. It also does not mean that it will not interfere with any underlying medical conditions.

Keep in mind that weight loss supplements should only be used together with eating habit changes. if you do not change your eating habits then once you stop taking the supplements and go back to old ways your weight will pile on again and you’ll gain even more weight than you originally lost.

Weight loss supplements are only a tool in the battle of the bulge. If they are Used correctly and with care then they will help you to develop good eating habits that you can continue when you no longer take the supplements

I started my weight loss journey in 2012 after making a New Year’s resolution to shed some weight.

I was starting to develop symptoms associated with Diabetes and that scared me. My knees and hips hurt on a daily basis and it was getting hard to walk up and down the stairs.

Why I Gained Weight

I would say a lot of my weight gain had to do with inactivity. I work from home so I really did not have to leave the house. I was very inactive. Also during this time my husband was also out of work so it was a bit stressful. I did a lot of stress eating. I was eating at least 3,000-5000 calories a day with no exercise and burning less than a few hundred calories a day.

Here is what I did:

Sugar Detox

My husband came home from work one day and mentioned to me that a co-worker had lost an enormous amount of weight by simply removing sugar from his diet.

It is next to impossible to remove all sugar from your diet. Fruits and some vegetables contains natural sugars. Some simple carbs can convert to sugar in your body. The sugar he was referring to was white and brown sugar. I removed sugar from my diet.

I began to look at my diet and noticed that I ate a lot of carbohydrates (pasta, bread, rice, potatoes). I removed them from my meal plan. I also removed donuts, honey buns, cakes, cookies, ice cream, and pies from my meals. I wasn’t a juice or soda drinker so that was easy to remove. I also cut cheese and cows milk from my diet completely.

My Meals:

My meals consisted of: oatmeal, bananas, strawberries, eggs, turkey bacon, chicken, ground turkey, kale, collard greens, spinach, string beans,great northern beans, chic peas, broccoli, almonds, sunflower seeds. almond milk.

Water Intake:

I drank water half my weigh in water every day. This included green tea with lemon (no sugar, honey or agave nectar). Probably the hardest thing but I knew drinking water would help me stay fuller longer, help me stay hydrated and help flush toxins out of my system.


I walked 20+ minutes a day 3-4 times per week. I would walk everywhere. The nearest store was about 8 blocks. I did not care how cold it was outside. I was committed to getting as much exercise in as possible. I would make up reasons to have to walk to the store so I could get my steps in daily.

Bathroom Breaks:

Most people only release waste 2-3 times per week. I was eating 3-5 meals a day but releasing 1-2 times per week. I was beyond constipated.

Why is releasing waste important?

Cleaning your colon has the ability to assist in your weight loss. People have experienced up to 20 pounds lost over a month period. For me this is not just a diet but a lifestyle change. I still enjoy the foods I like but in moderation.

It takes a conscious effort to be positive. We are bombarded daily with negativity. News feeds are filled with negative stories to attract your attention. Media everywhere reminds us of our inadequacies that we need to address immediately to be desirable: wrinkles, bad breath, gray hair, body odor. The list goes on and on. And let’s not even get started on politicians and their campaigns. Mudslinging is common place in this arena. We are forever reminded of the negative, the undesirable, the problem that needs fixing.

The same goes for weight loss. We tend to approach it from our negative mindset, avoiding something we don’t want to be: being overweight, sick, tired. It’s actually quite refreshing to shift from the negative to a positive perspective. This happens when you decide what you want to create instead of avoid. In this case: optimal health. Weight loss will be a nice side effect when a healthy lifestyle is the goal. Shifting the focus from the negative to the positive lets us focus on the outcome, instead of on the process.

Lets put that concept into real life scenarios. Here are 10 common negative thoughts, how they manifest themselves and how we can regain control over our inner critic by turning them into a positive.

1. Unrealistic goals. “I want to lose 20 pounds for the party I just got invited to. Next week.” You want results and you want them now. Yesterday even. We sometimes attach unrealistic expectations to a new plan, then blame ourselves when the plan doesn’t deliver. Drastic weight loss plans and over-the-top exercise routines won’t bring optimal health. Instead of looking for the quick fix, think long-term. What you eat today is what the scale reflects tomorrow.

2. All or nothing. For you, everything is divided into good or bad, success or failure, ‘dieting’ or not. “Well, I ate that cheeseburger, I failed at this plan too. Pass the french fries.” Focus instead on progress, not perfection. Applaud the things you DID do today that will get you closer to your goal. “Yay, I only had one piece of pizza and water instead of wine.” Changes take time and mistakes will happen. Forget the end outcome and focus on the controllable, action factors.

3. Nothing less than perfection. “I should be able to say no to dessert. What the hell is the matter with me?” or “I just ate three french fries from my kids’ happy meal. I have no will power.” This is kind of like looking at your reflection on the magnified side of the mirror. *wince* You’re gonna find flaws. Getting healthy is a lifetime journey, not a sprint to a certain number on the scale. Plan accordingly.

4. Fear of failure. “That diet sounds way too hard for me. I’d mess it up for sure.” No one wants the shame or embarrassment of starting yet another plan and quitting half way to the goal because you hit a wall. Forget about previous outcomes. You may not have been ready. The plan may have been right for you. Honor your present self and not your past. “I am strong and capable.”

5. Fear of success. “I’ve always been the funny, fat girl.” or “I don’t want to become ‘that guy’ that always posts his workouts or takes pictures of his ‘healthy’ meals.” Having success may put you outside of your comfort zone. It may be hard to picture what the new you will be like. People will notice your success and you may not be confident enough to deal with the attention that brings. Friends may be jealous, spouses may be resentful. It’s OK to prioritize your health, self-esteem and wellness. Everyone deserves health, happiness, positive relationships and a positive attitude.

6. Build new habits. “I always go out for happy hour after a long week at work. I deserve it.” If food is your reward, your comfort or your escape, it’s time to create new habits. Your food is your fuel for optimal performance, nothing more. Eating crappy food is a punishment, not a reward. Start small and be consistent: drink more water, get to bed on time, order club soda and lime instead of wine at happy hour. Small incremental changes become the big changes over time. And don’t forget to applaud your successes along the way. “I feel great when I wake up and am ready to start the day.”

7. Procrastination. “I’ll start tomorrow (echo) tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow… ” Life is messy. There will never be a perfect time to start. There will always, always, always be something going on that could be an excuse. Working through the challenging times builds confidence. “I will do this.”

8. Support system. “I don’t even know where to start.” Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Surround yourself with positive people. Mentorship is often a big determining factor to success in weight loss. Find someone who has had the success you seek or has helped others find that success. “Let’s do this together.”

9. Lack of control. “I will always be fat.” Your body does not defy the laws of science, so no, you are not destined to be overweight. You have a new choice of what you eat every two to three hours. Choose wisely. Empower yourself by using terms like “I don’t… (eat greasy fried food, drink alcohol during the week, etc.)” instead of “I can’t… (dive into the bread basket, have a Snickers, etc.” This shift in thinking gives you, not the plan your on, the control.

10. Excuses, excuses, excuses. “I can’t afford it.” or “I don’t have the time to go for a walk.” or “The kids like to have cookies in the house.” There are a million of them. Focus on your health as your priority, something you want to fiercely protect. If it is important to you, you will find a way. If not, you will find an excuse. Sometimes small shifts are all that’s necessary, like tweaking a schedule to find time for exercise. Sometime a major overhaul is called for, like changing jobs to allow a better quality of life. “Nothing can stop me from reaching my goal.”

Changing your mindset can change the way you approach weight loss and can have a definite influence on the outcome. Try practicing some tolerance and self-love. Use your internal thoughts to boost you up, cheer you on and unleash positive vibes all over the damn place.

From my experience, generally when we want to make a change in our lives, we automatically default to giving something up or depriving ourselves by using willpower or discipline. However, all these actions are negative and will never last long term because emotionally and physically it is not what we need.

Personally I feel that for lasting change to happen, firstly we need to be mindful of the current action or habit so that we can work out how to change it. Then we need to see what positive action we can take to help us achieve that change. If it is positive, you like it, you feel good about it, you are more likely to continue until the new action has become a positive habit.

So as an example, if you feel you are overweight, instead of going on a diet or cutting down your portions or madly exercising, I suggest the following:

· Start being mindful of the habits you have around eating, i.e.: Do you let yourself get too hungry so that when you do eat, you grab the first thing available, you eat very quickly and therefore overeat.

· If that is the case, start being more aware of your body’s hunger signals. Check in every 2 to 3 hours to see if you are hungry. This can be as simple as asking yourself “Am I hungry”. If you are, eat something and then check in again in another 2 – 3 hours. If not, keep asking yourself every 20 minutes, so you know when you are definitely hungry.

· As well as being mindful, we also need to be prepared. Have a lunchbox or cooler bag available with lots of different options, so when you do get hungry you have something ready that you like, will enjoy and get satisfaction from.

If you follow this scenario, you will be eating small amounts regularly, rather than lurching from starving to full. You will note, you have not cut anything out, deprived yourself or relied on willpower. You have simply tuned into your body and given it what it needs when it needs it. This ensures you feel satisfied all the time and don’t feeling deprived or negative about your body.

You can then think about the foods you really enjoy. Do not give up anything unhealthy. Simply be mindful while eating any type of food, so you can hear your body tell you when it’s had enough. For example I know I can happily eat a medium size bowl of pasta, or salad or porridge. But there is no way I could eat a bowl of chocolate. My body would start to tell me it has had too much sugar and fat. It would start to taste sickly, or I would get a headache and generally feel unwell.

So in summary, be mindful of when you are hungry, give yourself exactly what you want and simply be mindful again so you can stop when your body has had enough.
